Scientific and Research Interests
Dr. D. Pozzi’s research field is focused on basic neurobiology, with a specific interest on several aspects of synaptic function and structure, such as neurotransmission, synaptic plasticity and synaptogenesis. During his carrier he investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying the development and function of the presynaptic terminal, both at the structural and functional level. Moreover he also studied the molecular differences between glutamatergic and GABAergic synapses, identifying alternative role of presynaptic proteins specifically expressed at the inhibitory and excitatory terminals. Subsequently, he focused his attention on several aspects of synaptic plasticity, working on the clarification of the molecular determinants involved in homeostatic plasticity. In particular he unveiled a new role of the transcription factor REST/NRSF in the negative regulation of intrinsic excitability through the control of sodium channel gene expression during elevated neuronal activity. More recently he started investigating the contribution of immune molecules (i.e. cytokines) to brain homeostasis both in physiological and pathological states.
