Andrea Brunati joins the ESICM NEXT Committee. Three abstracts explore artificial intelligence, ventilation and ultrasound.

A large delegation from Humanitas University and IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital attended LIVES 2026, the 39th Congress of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM), held in Lisbon from 10 to 14 October.

Andrea Brunati, a resident in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine at Humanitas University, has joined the ESICM NEXT Committee. The committee represents young European intensivists aged 37 and under within the Society’s governing bodies and promotes their training, mobility and professional development.

Three young researchers each presented an abstract:

  • Brenda Lupo Pasinetti, a resident, evaluated a large language model (GPT-4.1) within a secure hospital infrastructure, using it to analyse 500 clinical notes in Italian and estimate the risk of clinical deterioration. The model showed moderate agreement with clinicians and a negative predictive value of 94%, suggesting potential as a screening tool, although further validation is needed.
  • Giulia Lionetti, a PhD student, is investigating the effects of increasing positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) on the heart in patients receiving mechanical ventilation for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Preliminary data showed a decrease in cardiac output of at least 10% in 58% of sessions, with no baseline parameters able to predict this response.
  • Niccolò Stomeo, a PhD student, compared a handheld ultrasound device using artificial intelligence-based analysis with a reference standard for haemodynamic monitoring. Across 40 tests, ultrasound showed a negative predictive value of 88%, suggesting its potential to identify patients unlikely to benefit from additional fluid administration.

They were joined by Professor Maurizio Cecconi, Head of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at Humanitas, Director of the Residency Programme and Past President of ESICM, and Dr. Elena Costantini, Head of Critical Care Units at Humanitas.

Faculty members holding prominent positions within ESICM were also in attendance: Professor Antonio Messina, Chair of the Cardiovascular Dynamics Section; Professor Massimiliano Greco, Chair of the Data Science Section; Dr. Luca Carenzo, Chair of the Trauma and Emergency Medicine Section; and Dr. Gianluca Castellani, a member of the European Diploma in Intensive Care (EDIC) Committee.
