Masters of Science in Nursing and Midwifery

The Masters of Science in Nursing and Midwifery is a two-year program taught in Italian, with 40 places available and a total of 120 university credits. After the first common year, the students can choose between two different learning pathways with specific clinical content:

• Nursing in the Primary Care and Public Health Area
• Nursing in the Surgical Area

The ageing of the population and the increased complexity of patients, the increase in the number of chronically ill patients, the growing impact of technology and the need to acquire and use team working methodologies as well as technical and soft skills are just some of the elements underlying the need for the constant evolution of nurses’ skills.

The Masters of Science in Nursing and Midwifery aims to train healthcare professionals with specialist skills in clinical care in response to patients’ health problems. Students will develop preventive, educational, clinical, rehabilitative and palliative skills.

After obtaining the qualification, the masters of science graduates will be able to manage healthcare, nursing, epidemiological and clinical projects. They will also be able to take up the roles of expert managers and professionals in public and private services, at the hospital, territorial and community levels. They will be prepared to access further training and professional refresher courses, 1st and 2nd level Masters and Research Doctorates.

The teaching and learning activities include integrated course modules to ensure an interdisciplinary approach. The teaching and learning activities include lectures, interactive lessons, relational workshops, skill labs, high-fidelity simulations and clinical training placement.

Lessons are scheduled only 3 days a week (from Thursday to Saturday), including evening time (14.30-20.00) in order to facilitate the learning pathway of working students and allow them to attend the lessons. In addition, a limited number of students has the possibility of fragmenting the program, attending the courses and paying the fees for only one semester per academic year. The procedure is set out in a specific call.

In order to train healthcare professionals with specialised skills in clinical care, the master of science includes a common part that develops over two years and focuses on the development of knowledge and skills in the fields of health economics, management and organisation, scientific research and use of evidence, statistics, epidemiology, ethics and English language.

After the first year, students can choose between the two healthcare areas:

• Primary Care and Public Health Area – focused on the development of the skills required to design, implement and evaluate health promotion programs; primary, secondary and tertiary prevention; care of people with chronic and/or disabling diseases in all phases of the disease including the end of life; community reintegration of people with disabilities.
• Surgical Area – a pathway enabling graduates to assess, with a multidimensional approach, the needs of patients undergoing surgery in the perioperative phase, from the initial hospitalisation to the discharge at home. Students will also be able to handle, with specialised and advanced technical skills, devices such as ostomies and will be able to manage difficult wounds during the surgical pathway.
