Master's Degree in Advanced Nursing Science

The Master’s Degree Programme in Advanced Nursing Sciences, taught in Italian, is structured over a two-year period with 60 available places and involves the acquisition of 120 ECTS. After a common first year, students can choose between two different study tracks:

• Intensive Care and Emergency Nursing (30 places)
• Primary Care and Family and Community Nursing (30 places)

The rapidly evolving healthcare and social context makes advanced and structured nursing education increasingly urgent, in order to address the challenges of today’s healthcare systems.

• Demographic changes: population ageing and the rising prevalence of chronic diseases, together with the evolution of care models in critical care and emergency settings, are generating increasing complexity in patient management and require progressively more advanced specialist skills.
• Evolution of the National Health Service (SSN): the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and Ministerial Decree 77/2022 are steering the healthcare system towards community-based models and integrated care pathways, alongside the advancement of new techniques and technologies. This requires professionals with more advanced and up-to-date clinical competencies.
• International standards: alignment with the Advanced Practice Nurse model and the development of research and leadership skills are essential for the European and international positioning of the nursing profession.

Upon completion of the degree, graduates will be able to apply research, technologies, and advanced organizational models in both critical care and community settings. They will also develop clinical expertise and decision-making autonomy in highly complex situations and may take on leadership roles in care pathways, coordinating multidisciplinary teams and ensuring continuity of care.

They will also have access to advanced professional development courses, first- and second-level postgraduate master’s programmes, and PhD programmes.

The educational activities are organized into integrated courses designed to ensure a unified and interdisciplinary perspective. Teaching alternates between lectures, interactive sessions, seminars, relational workshops, skills labs, high-fidelity simulation, and clinical training placements.

To support working students, classes are scheduled over three days per week:

• Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
• Friday and Saturday from 9:20 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

In addition, a limited number of students may access a modular study pathway, allowing them to attend and pay the tuition fee for only one semester per academic year. The relevant procedures are defined in a specific call for applications.

During the two-year programme, all students complete an initial phase focused on the development of disciplinary and research competencies, shared across both specialist tracks.

In addition to the common curriculum, students will specialize in one of the two selected pathways:

Intensive Care and Emergency Nursing

Training focused on the management of critically ill patients and clinically unstable conditions, including advanced monitoring, healthcare technologies, emergency care, and high-intensity care settings.

Primary Care and Family and Community Nursing

Focus on chronic disease management, community-based care, and health promotion, with the development of competencies in care continuity and integrated health and social care.

Both pathways integrate theoretical teaching, advanced simulation, and specialized clinical placements, with an approach oriented towards practice, innovation, and research.
