My expertise is related to innate immunity and regulation of inflammatory responses. My activity has been focused on the functional characterization of original molecules of the immune system, in particular of the long pentraxin PTX3 in innate immune responses to pathogens of fungal, bacterial or viral origin, and in the regulation of inflammatory responses in conditions of infections or tissue damage, such as wound healing and cancer. I contributed to characterize the diagnostic potential of PTX3 in human inflammatory diseases and I am now involved in the translation of PTX3 to the clinic as therapeutic and diagnostic tool in infectious diseases. I also focused on IL-1R8/SIGIRR, a member of the family of IL-1 Receptors and Toll Like Receptors, acting as a negative regulator of inflammatory and immune responses triggered by TLR engagement and by IL-1 family members, in the context of inflammatory diseases, infections, autoimmunity and cancer.
