Academic background

Professor Maurizio Cecconi is an anesthesiologist intensive care specialist. He completed his studies in Italy (University of Udine), Spain (Universidad Autonoma de Madrid), the UK (doctoral degree at St George’s University of London), and the USA (research program GCSRT at Harvard Medical School).

He worked for 14 years as an NHS Consultant at St George’s Hospital, London, UK, where he chaired one of Europe’s largest Critical Care Departments.

He is the immediate Past President of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, leading through the most challenging times of its history during the COVID-19 pandemic. He designed and directed the EU-funded C19_SPACE to 20000 healthcare workers.

Under his Leadership, ESICM established its reputation within European Institutions and was awarded the Gastein Health Forum European Health Leadership Award in 2021.

In 2018, he was awarded the Silver Griffin by his Alma Mater, the University of Udine. In 2020, he was mentioned by JAMA as one of the most influential doctors of the pandemic,

and was nominated Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.

Maurizio’s research focuses on Improving surgical outcomes with perioperative optimization, the physiology of shock, Acute Respiratory Failure, and Sepsis, and Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in anesthesia and intensive care. He’s also contributed to global anesthesia and intensive care guidelines. He is part of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign and works with WHO for the COVID-19 Clinical Guidelines.

His research is published in leading journals, such as the Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and Intensive Care Medicine.  He is invited regularly as a speaker at leading international conferences and Institutions.

His work is highly cited; as of September 2023, he has an h-index of 83.

Professor Cecconi conducts extensive research programs in anesthesia and intensive care medicine. His work in anesthesia and perioperative medicine includes optimizing perioperative care, developing fluid administration methods, and advancing hemodynamic monitoring to reduce postoperative complications. His intensive care studies have improved fluid administration for cardiovascular shock and sepsis.

Additionally, he’s researched venous return physiology, fluid challenges, acute respiratory failure, ARDS, and surgical outcomes epidemiology.

Recently, he’s explored machine learning and artificial intelligence applications in the above fields. Cecconi has led notable observational studies and randomised controlled trials. He is the national coordinator and Principal Investigator for REMAP-CAP in Italy.
