Education and Academic Background
Danese graduated at the Catholic University “Sacro Cuore” of Rome in 1999.
From 2001 to 2004, he moved to the Division of Gastroenterology – Case Western Reserve University -Cleveland, Ohio,US- where he worked as Research Associate in the field of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), under the supervision of Prof. Claudio Fiocchi.
In 2004, Prof. Danese became specialist in Gastroenterology at the School of Specialization of the Policlinico Gemelli of Rome, leaded by Prof. G. Gasbarrini and at the same time he began the PhD/Doctor in Physiopathology of Metabolism, focusing specifically on basic and applied research concerning IBD.
Silvio Danese is now Full Professor of Gastroenterology at Humanitas University and head of the IBD center at the Humanitas Research Hospital.
He is currently working on several basic research projects and many phase I, II and III clinical trials for the treatment of IBD patients, in collaboration with numerous Italian, European and American centers.
He is also Member of the Editorial Board of “Current Drug Target” and “Alimentary Pharmacol & Therapeutics” and Associate Editor of “Gut” and “Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis”. He organizes and partecipates every year to numerous congresses, including ECCO, UEGW, DDW, FISMAD and he has published more than 300 research articles on peer-reviewed journal with high impact factor.
- From 2006 Prof. Danese teaches regularly classes at the students of Medicine. The classes are mainly based on Celiac Disease and Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
- Since 2004 he has supervised the thesis of several medical and PhD students.
- From July 2015 he is full Professor of Gastroenterology at Humanitas University .
Scientific and Research Interests
There are nearly 4 million people worldwide living with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, namely Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis, which in Italy affect approximately 200.000 persons. The development of new therapeutic approaches requires a better understanding of the molecular mechanism behind IBD pathogenesis.
Numerous are the research studies operating in Prof. Danese’s laboratory, some of which are developed in collaboration with national (IEO, IFOM, Policlinico Gemelli di Roma, Ospedale San Raffaele di Milano) and international (Chicago University, Notredame University, Cleveland University, Research Institute BSRC Athene) groups.
His research career is focused on the discovery of potential mechanisms involved in IBD and IBD-associated Colorectal Cancer pathogenesis, with a particular interest to leukocyte trafficking through both the blood and lymphatic intestinal endothelium.
He is investigating the role of lipid mediators in the resolution of intestinal inflammation, but he is also trying to understand the relationship between mucosal barrier integrity and microbiota in IBD, Colorectal Cancer and IBD-associated complications, such as Fibrosis.
