Master in Clinical Epidemiology

Humanitas University’s Master in clinical epidemiology is intended for physicians and researchers in clinical and preclinical areas who wish to learn more about how to plan, carry out and analyse epidemiological investigations.

The Master

Humanitas University’s Master “Epidemiology For Clinical Research” aims to promote the application of quantitative methods for translational medicine to the study of clinically relevant research questions. Improving patient care is the heart of the training.

Programme

Quantitative methods are essential to conduct efficient and valid research in clinical settings. Their rapid development and increasing complexity make formal training of medical researchers involved in study design and analysis a priority.

The Master is structured in 7 modules, described below.

1. Introduction to epidemiological and biostatistical methods I

  • basic concepts of clinical epidemiology including development of research questions, measure of disease frequency and conduction of good research in clinical settings

2. Introduction to epidemiological and biostatistical methods II

  • basic principles of clinical epidemiology including measures of association, options in study design, definition of bias, confounding and effect modification

3. Observational studies in clinical epidemiology

This module familiarizes students with use and analysis of observational studies in clinical epidemiology.

  • natural history of disease
  • design of case-control and cohort studies

4. Randomized clinical trials and survival analysis

This module is designed to introduce students to the theory, practice and analysis of intervention studies, including randomized controlled trials, non-randomized interventions and community interventions.

5. Diagnostic and prognostic studies

The module covers theory, methods and practice of diagnostic and prognostic research. It covers basic and more advanced concepts, including sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratios, ROC curves, discrimination, calibration, net reclassification. It discusses options in study design and potential sources of bias. Finally, it focuses on modelling, validation and case-studies.

6. Prediction model summary practical and analysis of missing data

The module covers the topics of the previous one mainly from a practical perspective, with a long computer summary practical focused on clinical prediction models. Students will be asked to work in small groups and then report on their analyses. This module also focuses on analyses of missing data.

7. Causal inference summary practical

The last module focuses on causal inference both from a theoretical and a practical perspective. Students will be asked to work in small groups on a real dataset with a long summary computer practical, and then report on their analyses. The final day of the master includes the issue of the reproducibility of clinical findings and a final discussion.

  • audio-visual media, case studies and examples from the literature;
  • development of a project under the supervision of a tutor;  
  • thesis.

Admission requirements

This Master is intended for medical professionals.

Applicants must have a master’s degree / medical specialty certificate or foreign qualification equivalent in

  • Biology;
  • Medical, veterinary or pharmaceutical biotechnology;
  • Pharmacy and industrial pharmacy;
  • Medicine and Surgery.

Preference is given to those applicants holding a medical specialty certificate and/or a Ph.D. or equivalent.  

Admission Process

There are 15 places available.

Admission is based on qualifications and possible interview.

The Commission takes into consideration the applicants’ CV, professional experience and proven aptitude for clinical and translational research.

How to apply

Applications CLOSING on September 30th.

The application procedure is described below.

1. Registration on MyPORTAL

During the registration phase you will be asked to insert your personal data and at the end you will receive a confirmation email with your username and password to access the system and go on to the following phases of the admission process.

 

 

2. Application for the Master in Epidemiology

In order to candidate, access your reserved area on MyPortal (click here to login) using the username and password received via mail in the registration phase. Select Registrar’s Office from the menu on your left and click on Admissions test.

To complete the application, attach the documents listed below (each file must be a PDF not exceeding 2 MB):

  • Application (Attachment 1) completed, dated and signed;
  • Curriculum Vitae et Studiorum complete with clinical experience gained in endoscopy;
  • Copy of a valid document of identification.

The declarations made in the admissions application (Attachment 1) have the same legal value as certifications as per the D.P.R. 445/2000.

Information entered can be modified until the moment of submission of the application.

 

3. Payment

On submission of the application, the system will automatically generate an email that confirms receipt of the application and that requests payment by credit card of the application fee of € 50 (including duty stamp).

The application is considered completed only on payment of the application fee. This fee is non-refundable and must be paid within the application deadline.

Receipt of payment can be confirmed by accessing the reserved area with username and password.
