Humanitas Research Hospital
Humanitas Research Hospital is the flagship hospital of Humanitas Group. It is a highly specialized hospital, research and teaching centre, accredited by the National Health-Care System, with the mission of providing people with outstanding and highly specialized diagnostic and therapeutic services. Built around centres for the prevention and treatment of cancer, cardiovascular, neurological and orthopedic disease – together with an Ophthalmic Centre and a Fertility Centre – Humanitas also operates a highly specialized Emergency Department, with more than 55.000 annual visits. Every day 4,000 patients visit Humanitas and 10,000 outpatient services are performed.
Healthcare, supported by the best specialist expertise, with more than 2000 professionals, 500 students and 200 trained volunteers, and integrated by a multidisciplinary approach, is sustained by continual research activities aimed at improving and personalizing care and treatments’ effectiveness.
Humanitas is considered one of the most technologically advanced hospitals in Europe, with last generation equipment such as 5 NMR including 3T, 2 CT-PET with cyclotron, 5 radiotherapy accelerators including 2 TRUEBEAM, DA VINCI Robot, Gamma Knife, just to name a few.
Humanitas believes it is essential to associate organizational efficiency and clinical quality. This is why it was the first general hospital in Italy, and one of the few in Europe, to be certificated for quality by Joint Commission International. Cited by Harvard Business Review as one of the most innovative hospitals in the world, Humanitas is a case study of the Harvard Business School for its organizational model, which unites economic sustainability, development and social responsibility.
Together with Humanitas Foundation for Research, Humanitas Research Hospital is one of the sponsors of Humanitas University.
Humanitas Research Centre
Humanitas Research Centre is recognised by the Ministry of Health and the Lombardy Region as among the centres that are distinguished by the quality of the treatment and the ability to transfer the results of research and innovation to daily clinical practice (IRCCS – Institute for Treatment and Research) in the sphere of immunodegenerative diseases. There are about 300 professionals involved in research, of which 170 researchers and 130 doctors, operating in 30 labs, equipped with highly innovative and specific instruments. The research activity ranges from translational to clinical and preclinical. The 4 main areas of research are immunity and inflammation, oncology, cardiovascular and neuroscience.
The Research Centre’s mission makes it unique in Italy, networking with centres of excellence such as the Universities of Lovanio and New York, Madrid Biotechnology Centre, the Queen Mary School of Medicine in England and Pasteur Institute of Paris. Since 2006 Humanitas has also been a part of the European Network of Immunology Institutes.
Humanitas research performance is assessed annually by SCImago Research Group, which analyzes the publications of more than 4,000 research centres. Humanitas is one of the 105 biomedical institutes (out of 661 worldwide) which in 2012 were awarded with the Green Label of Research Impact.
Research at Humanitas is promoted by Humanitas Foundation for Research. Along with Humanitas Research Hospital, the Humanitas Foundation for Research is one of the sponsors of Humanitas University.
Areas of research
Humanitas is a world famous centre of excellence for research on diseases connected to immune system and inflammation from cancer to rheumatoid arthritis. It has proven to be able to conduct high quality research and to provide a stimulating environment favoring independence of young investigators, while living up to the expectations of its most important stakeholders, the patients. Our immunology studies spread to specific, hot issues in clinical areas such as neurodegenerative diseases, heart failure, autoimmune diseases and oncology and as such contribute to the advancement of disease understanding and treatment efficacy by interacting with physicians operating in the hospital.
The Cardiovascular Research Laboratory, among the top ones in Europe, carries out comprehensive programs ranging from basic research to diagnosis and therapy. The current cutting-edge research project is addressing the epigenetics of cardiovascular diseases to assess whether external factors other than genetics can affect the onset of heart and vascular system diseases while in the diagnostic area ongoing studies encompass the development of biomarkers to predict the predisposition to a disease or to predict the individual response to a drug (pharmacogenetics).
Our Laboratory of Pharmacology and Brain Pathology is mainly focused on the study of the functional role of synaptic proteins involved in some neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders (autism, schizophrenia, ADHD, depression, intellectual disabilities). In recent times it identified two proteins involved in the control of dendritic spine morphology and showed that a reduction in their levels of expression results in spine abnormalities and learning defects. Our Oncology and Neurosurgery division is running various research programs ranging from the integrated combination of neurosurgery, neuroimaging, intraoperative neurophysiology and neuropsycology for tumor removal to a large cooperative translational program to identify the molecular determinants of glioma angiogenesis, progression and response to therapy.
Humanitas Cancer Center is at the forefront of translational research and represents a valuable setting with laboratories of molecular and cellular biology, clinical pharmacology and cancer therapeutics, an extensive program of biobanking combined with clinical units devoted to drug development in both oncology and hematology. Strong translational programs where understanding of disease at molecular level is combined with early pre-clinical anc early phase clinical development is the strategy we pursue to validate truly relevant non-cosmetic new antitumor therapies.
